Structural Designer

The successful candidate will be responsible for a variety of basic detail engineering work activities which includes drafting and designing various structures, preparing specifications, site inspection, preparing technical reports, project coordination, scope of work documents, bill of material documents, cost estimates and document control activities. This position reports directly to the Manager, Mechanical/Civil Services.

Skills and Requirements:

  • College diploma in Civil or Structural Engineering.
  • 1-8 years relevant design experience in an engineering firm or industrial environment.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary coordination to identify design and drawing inputs.
  • Knowledge of structural analysis and structural design is essential.
  • Strong knowledge of AutoCAD, MicroStation, and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Skilled in using Inventor or Solidworks applications would be considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of engineering design standards, codes, and guidelines.
  • Ability to prioritize and multi-task in a fast-paced environment with competing priorities.
  • Able to ensure that all designs will maintain a safe operating environment.
  • Strong organizational and planning skills.
  • Excellent analytical, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Strong numerical ability and reasoning skills.
  • Must be self-motivated and be able to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Must effectively liaise with team members in other disciplines, including designers, EITs, and engineers to ensure client needs are met.

IT/Network Administrator

The IT/Network Administrator’s role is to ensure the stable operation of the networks, computer systems and peripherals, including installation, configuration, maintenance, support, and optimization, as well as provide technical assistance, direction and training across various system environments.

We are seeking a motivated self-starter, with excellent interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written). The successful candidate is customer service-oriented with the ability to work under pressure while maintaining a positive attitude.

The ideal candidate will be professional and well-organized with the ability to solve technical issues quickly and independently. The IT/Network Administrator is expected to provide these services with a high-level of technical competency and independence.

This position is also part of an on-call rotation. During the on-call period, the individual is expected to respond to requests from clients and urgent server alerts in a timely manner.

Primary duties:

  • Provide Service Desk support to users via phone, email, or in-person and, perform post-resolution follow-ups to help desk requests.
  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, and resolve hardware, software, or other network and system problems, and replace defective components.
  • Maintain and administer computer networks and related computing environments including computer hardware, systems software, applications software, and all configurations.
  • Monitors all backups, maintaining data on-site and off-site as determined by BESTECH and client requirements, and perform regular tests.
  • Amend current policies and develop new policies for the IT function as required.
  • Develop and adhere to IT standards, and standard operating procedures to maintain BESTECH’s IT and client compliance requirements.
  • Manage IT projects by understanding project objectives and scope, following project milestones, sharing technical expertise, and providing recommendations.
  • Perform network maintenance and system upgrades including services packs, patches, firmware, hot fixes and security configurations.
  • Manage configuration and installations to various network devices and services (e.g., routers, switches, firewall, VPN, QoS).
  • Ensure network connectivity of all systems including workstations, servers, printers, and other devices.
  • Administer all network equipment, hardware, and software upgrades; escalate issues as required; and work with high-level managers to identify effective solutions and develop long-term IT strategies.
  • Provide on-call support, as required; comfortable working at client sites; provide technical consulting and advice to clients as requested.
  • Thoroughly test new applications and develop employee training.

As with any position with BESTECH, the IT/Network Administrator is responsible for adhering to company policies and procedures, maintaining a safe operating environment, and may also have other duties assigned as required.

Essential Job Requirements & Experience:

  • Degree or diploma in related IT program.
  • Minimum (5) years of hands-on experience with network & system capacity planning, security principles, and general management best practices in a medium to large enterprise environment.
  • Strong, hands-on technical knowledge of network and server operating systems, including Cisco IOS, Active Directory, Windows Server & VMWare.
  • Working technical knowledge of current network hardware, protocols, and standards, including VOIP, LAN, WAN and WLAN.
  • Creativity/Innovation: Develop new and unique ways to improve operations of the organization and to create new opportunities.
  • Ability to understand complex business processes and communicate them effectively to others.
  • Knowledge of various software – including Microsoft Office, Visio, SQL, Office 365, Dynamics 365, Autodesk, Bentley, Skype for Business, Exchange.
  • Demonstrated communication, problem solving, troubleshooting, and time management skills.
  • Must be able to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Strong documentation skills and experience creating procedures, topology diagrams, installation scopes, and workflows.
  • Self-motivated, positive, and able to focus on delivering ‘On Spec, On Time, On Budget’.
  • Must possess a valid Ontario Driver’s License and reliable transportation.

Additional Assets/Preferred:

  • Industry-recognized accreditation e.g. CCNA, Network+, Microsoft, etc.
  • Experience integrating cloud-based services.
  • Hands-on experience in a multivendor switching and routing environment.
  • Demonstrated data center design and implementation experience.

Automation Engineer, P.Eng.

The Automation Engineer is responsible for the execution of the detailed engineering design to prepare design criteria, engineering calculations, technical specifications, data sheets and reports and technical compliance, code compliance, checks and balances, in accordance with the project procedures. The Automation Engineer executes, coordinates and expedites a succession of different engineering jobs, as part of capital expenditure projects. The successful candidate will work independently to plan and carry out project steps that require the application of mature engineering knowledge.

Primary Job Duties:

  • Accountable for planning, estimating, and documentation of   projects, both directly and indirectly by overseeing the work of   others in the department.
  • Meet with clients to analyze their needs and requirements, making recommendations.
  • May carry out engineering studies to determine how best to   solve a problem using surveys, site visits, tests, cost   analyses and other standard procedures, recommending   most economical methods of construction or change-over.
  • Prepare engineering analysis of projects to include:   preliminary design, calculation, life-cycle cost and equipment selection.
  • Sign, date and affix seal to final drawings, specifications, plans, reports or other documents prepared, as required.
  • Plan, design, document and program PLCs.
  • Design and develop HMIs.
  • Prepare and interpret blueprints, schematic drawings, layouts and other visual aids.
  • Responsible for ensuring proper commissioning and   project closing procedures are followed.
  • Expected to provide guidance and technical expertise to the   team on client projects, as well as contributing to organizational improvement on an on-going basis.

Essential Job Requirements & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related discipline (preferred: Electrical, Mechatronics, or Software Engineering).
  • Must be registered or immediately eligible to register as a P.Eng in Ontario.
  • 5-10 years of relevant experience in an engineering or project management role with a technical firm.
  • Knowledge of mining related processes is a definite asset.
  • Extensive knowledge in automation technology and automation products.
  • Sound understanding of design engineering codes and technical standards.
  • Extensive computer knowledge in industry applications, including Microsoft Office, Microsoft Project, AutoCAD and MicroStation.
  • Knowledge of Electrical, Instrumentation and Mechanical type systems.
  • Leadership and Project Management experience is essential.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills, with exceptional report writing skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to be flexible/adaptable in exercising judgment in a changing environment and to manage competing priorities.

Mining Engineer

The successful candidate will have accumulated a high level of engineering expertise both at the discipline theory and in its application through study work and field experience.  The Mining Engineer will develop and maintain rolling 12 and 18 month plans and build BESTECH’s Mining Engineering team to grow our existing services team.  This person will be responsible to build and manage the Mining team to 1) develop mine designs at the FEL2-3 and Detailed Engineering levels, 2) help clients to integrate MineRP solutions, 3) work with our technology team for the integration of solutions within the mining industry.  This role will be based in our Sudbury or GTA office.

Essential Job Requirements & Experience:

  • University degree in Mining Engineering with 6+ years progressive mining experience, both operational and technical, with the majority in underground mining.
  • Proven track record of delivering complex and sophisticated engineering design projects
  • Extensive knowledge in engineering standards, codes and guidelines.
  • Must be registered as or immediately eligible to register as a P.Eng in Ontario.
  • Working knowledge of mine design software (Deswik, Autocad, Datamine).
  • Extensive computer knowledge in industry applications, including Deswik, MineRP, Promine, AutoCAD, EPS and Advanced user of Microsoft Excel. (Microstation or Microsoft Project).
  • Must be familiar with underground ventilation methods and the use of ventilation software such as Ventsim and VNet.
  • Must be fit for duty, and able to make frequent underground work site visits.
  • Knowledge of local market conditions, emerging trends and opportunities.
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) and the ability to manage complex situations with multiple stakeholders utilizing conflict resolution skills.
  • Strong project leadership skills with ability to coach and mentor and share safety and ethical behaviors.
  • Demonstrated analytical, problem-solving, conflict resolution, decision-making skills and time management skills.
