Your Role as Geotechnical/Rock Mechanics Engineer, P.Eng.

You are a key contributor in our highly energized mining team with responsibility for geotechnical engineering support for mine engineering work from conceptual design to mine closure. You are flexible in your role allowing you to take on broad range of engineering assignments including projects that are both geotechnical and non-geotechnical. You plan, manage, and complete strategic, tactical, and operational studies, producing the best technical, financial, and social solutions for our clients.

  • Plan, manage and execute underground rock mechanics studies.
  • Provide technical input to design studies and engineering support to operating mines.
  • Conduct geo-mechanical and numerical modelling analysis for underground excavation design and development/production stope sequencing.
  • Geotechnical characterization and applying rock mechanics principles to underground mine design issues.
  • Present to clients the results of analysis and modelling. Prepare technical reports and proposals.
  • Provide field support to clients through assessment of ground conditions, providing design and oversight of rock reinforcement systems, conducting failure analysis of engineered mine designs and rock reinforcement products, and providing design of remediation/solutions for unstable ground conditions.
  • Prepare and provide oversight to geo-mechanical data acquisition programs.
  • Review third-party technical documents and provide recommendations.
  • Ensure projects meet the requirements of industry standards, best practices, and regulations, and work within established company and industry policies and procedures.
  • Manage projects when required and coordinate the activities of the project team.
  • Assist with the business development process by identifying, developing, and following through on new business opportunities.
  • Attend conferences and workshops to promote BESTECH, learn about the latest mining approaches and trends.
  • Utilize leadership skills to coach, mentor, and develop employees working in the mining group.

Your Education and Licence

  • A bachelor’s degree in mining, geology, geotechnical engineering, or a related engineering discipline from an accredited university, with minimum (4) years’ engineering experience in mining operations or consulting engineering; OR a master’s degree in mining engineering, or related engineering or geosciences discipline from an accredited university, and a minimum (2) years’ experience in mining operations or consulting engineering.
  • Professional engineering licence or eligible for registering as a professional engineer in Ontario.
  • Registered as a professional engineer in another province, territory, or another country (e.g., United States) would be considered an asset.
  • Valid driver’s licence with access to a personal vehicle.

Your Key Qualifications

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of mining and mining engineering applications in underground environments. Having knowledge of surface mining engineering environments would be considered an asset.
  • Ability to undertake geotechnical design for various types of underground mining methods including long-hole stoping, cut and fill, sublevel caving, block caving, room and pillar and others.
  • Skill in researching, analyzing, and communicating information of considerable difficulty and develop appropriate conclusions and actions.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite and mine design/planning CAD software (e.g., Deswik)
  • Proficiency in 2D/3D geo-mechanical numerical modelling packages (e.g., FLAC 3D, Map 3D, Dips, RocData, Slide-2/Slide-3, RS2/RS3, RocFall, RocPlane, SWedge, UnWedge, Examine, RocSupport, UDEC or 3DEC, etc.).
  • Practical experience in geotechnical logging, mapping, rock mass characterization and hydrogeology would be considered an asset.
  • Practical experience analyzing and interpreting mine seismic data would be considered an asset.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Excellent interpersonal abilities.
  • High degree of problem-solving and analytical abilities.
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently and in a team environment to meet tight deadlines and achieve client satisfaction targets.
  • Willingness to travel, if required, and attend meetings and field visits on client sites.
  • Assist in Business Development to support company growth. Generate leads and opportunities with both new and existing clients.
  • Fluent in English with basic fluency in other languages (e.g., French, Spanish, Portuguese) would be considered an asset.
  • Flexibility and ability to work in a virtual environment when necessary.
