Your role as Transmission and Distribution Line Engineer

Job summary

Reporting to the Supervisor of Transmission and Distribution Line Engineering Services, you will play a key role in the design and optimization of transmission and distribution systems.  Your role will involve collaborating closely with clients to understand their needs and with our dedicated team to ensure successful coordination throughout the course of projects. This position involves working with clients on a variety of projects, from initial design and feasibility studies to project implementation and maintenance.  The ideal candidate will bring technical expertise and consulting experience, ensuring projects are delivered on time and within budget while maintaining high standards of quality and safety.


Your key accountabilities

  • Design and analyze transmission and distribution systems, including structural/electrical design, material selection for fit and function, and specify equipment, to meet client requirements.
  • Conduct full feasibility studies, including estimates, preliminary modelling and electrical clearance checks.
  • Research and collaborate with vendors to ensure proper specification, quotation of materials and education of junior staff.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams, clients, and other stakeholders to incorporate design requirements and ensure seamless project execution.
  • Ensure all designs comply with relevant industry standards, regulations, and client standards to maintain the integrity and reliability of overhead infrastructure.
  • Prepare detailed engineering drawings, technical specifications, construction cost estimates, and other necessary documentation for client approval.
  • Oversee and markup drawing packages as they relate to overhead systems projects to assure content meets client goals and design expectations.
  • Guide and mentor junior engineers, fostering their professional growth and ensuring high-quality project outcomes.
  • Stay informed about the latest developments in powerline engineering and incorporate best practices into project designs.
  • Assist in the development of proposals and the quotation of new projects.
  • Liaise with government agencies, municipalities, and other regulatory bodies to obtain necessary permits and ensure compliance with local regulations.
  • Prepare reports and documentation required for approvals, permits, and project updates.
  • Prepare construction scopes and design basis for overhead systems projects.
  • Conduct field surveys to assess existing conditions and gather relevant data, including terrain, right-of-way, existing infrastructure, environmental constraints, and other relevant factors that may impact overhead systems design.
  • Provide support during the construction phase of projects, responding to queries and clarifications from construction teams, and addressing design modifications and adjustments as needed.
  • Seek opportunities to improve design efficiency and quality.
  • Foster a culture of safety, quality, and continuous improvement within the engineering team, promoting best practices and adherence to industry standards.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related field.
  • Professional engineering license in the province of Ontario is preferred.
  • Minimum of 6 years of experience in overhead powerline system design and engineering, ideally within a consulting environment.
  • Experience with all voltages 230 kV and below, OPGW, and fiber.
  • Proficient in overhead system analysis software (e.g. PLS-CADD, PLS-Pole, SPIDAcalc, etc.)
  • Ability to analyze component fit and tolerances to avoid construction issues.
  • Strong knowledge of electrical transmission and distribution systems, with a deep understanding of industry standards and regulations.
  • Familiarity with relevant safety standards, utility codes, and regulatory requirements.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively interact with clients, team members and stakeholders.
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving and time management skills.
  • Detail-oriented and able to maintain accurate documentation throughout the design process of projects.
  • Ability to prioritize and multi-task in a fast-paced environment with competing high-priorities.
  • Self-disciplined and self-motivated with a demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision or in a team environment.
  • Strong commitment to safety, quality, and sustainable design practices.
  • Willingness to travel as needed for project assessments, meetings and on-site support.
  • A valid driver’s licence with access to a personal vehicle is required.

Type or Salary Range

Full-Time, Permanent (40 hours/week)
