Detroit Salt

New Brake Callipers & Spring Pack Arrangement
2008
Mine Hoist Division

Detroit Salt encountered a challenge due to insufficient braking capacity. The hoist was unable to handle increased load demands with its current configuration.

The bulky brake weights and limited space for new equipment complicated the situation, requiring an efficient solution to enhance braking without needing additional space.

SCOPE

The solution involved designing new drum brake callipers, brake posts, and tie rods to fit within the existing space. The old bulky brake weights were replaced with new spring packs featuring a hydraulic release system.

A crucial part of this project was testing the new brake assembly. It was fully assembled and test-fitted in the shop to ensure compatibility and effectiveness. This step confirmed that the new components worked together seamlessly and fit properly. Only after a successful test fit was the brake assembly approved and shipped to the customer.

OUTCOME

The innovative design of the new braking components met the increased operational demands while adhering to existing spatial limitations, exemplifying the value of tailored engineering solutions in industrial settings where equipment must adapt to changing demands to maintain efficiency and safety.
