Mining

Glencore identified a disconnect between engineering planning and operations execution that limited productivity. To address this, the company implemented a robust engineering system to bridge the gap.

The goal was to provide structure and focus to operational planning, aiming for operational excellence and industry-leading productivity.

Scope

The solution involved developing a comprehensive engineering system comprising structured management routines and integrated digital tools. Management routines, daily, weekly, and monthly schedule reviews, ensured focused communication among personnel, and aligned short-term activities with long-term objectives.

Glencore deployed digital tools including Deswik.OPS, Deswik.SCHED, Deswik.CAD, PowerBI, and SIMS. BESTECH collaborated with the teams to identify critical information sources and develop tools that centralized data access. This minimized time spent searching for information and maximized planning and decision-making time. The tools provided real-time key performance metrics and work progress, allowing for informed and collaborative decisions.

Outcome

The integrated engineering system significantly enhanced Glencore’s operational efficiency. It improved collaboration between operations and technical services, promoting better alignment and accountability. The structured management routines established a predictable decision-making process, while the digital tools granted immediate data access for decisive action. One key benefit was an increase in effective face time, enabling operational teams to focus on execution rather than reactive planning. The system is now a foundational part of Glencore’s digital transformation and will be renewed and refined as the mine’s needs evolve into the future.
