Process Control Network Upgrade
2016
Automation

Glencore aimed to enhance communication within its Process Control Network (PCN) and bolster network security by removing devices that interconnected its corporate and process control networks.

BESTECH was engaged to mitigate risks by implementing new gateway communication devices.

SCOPE

The process began with an assessment of the current network racks to prepare for the new component installations. The team was responsible for updating the functional descriptions of PLC devices, revising electrical and network topology drawings, and redesigning rack layouts.

To ensure reliable and redundant communication within the PCN, modifications were made, including the installation of fibre optic cabling to connect the new components. Additionally, BESTECH was tasked with generating construction and commissioning reports.

OUTCOME

The project successfully enhanced Glencore’s PCN, resulting in improved communication pathways and increased network security by isolating the corporate and control networks. BESTECH’s ongoing commitment included continual upgrades to Glencore’s Smelter PCN to maintain and update hardware, software, licensing, and maintenance programs, ensuring minimal operational disruptions. This strategic upgrade significantly enhanced network reliability and efficiency, supporting Glencore’s operational needs.
