Glencore Sudbury INO

Substation Detailed Engineering
2021
Power Systems

The primary goal was to enhance the power supply to accommodate increased loads and extend distribution reach, particularly for supporting production ramp-up at Glencore.

BESTECH was tasked with completing the detailed engineering necessary for constructing a new 115kV to 25kV substation and a new 115kV line.

SCOPE

The project required coordination with Hydro One to establish a new customer-owned substation and integrate it with existing grid infrastructure. BESTECH developed comprehensive equipment and construction specifications for project execution. The team evaluated oil containment options, providing recommendations to optimize environmental safety and compliance.

On-site construction support was continuous, along with leadership in commissioning to ensure safe energization of the substation. Communication protocols were established to relay telemetry points to Hydro One and the IESO, ensuring integration and operational continuity.

OUTCOME

The completion of the substation and associated infrastructure greatly improved power distribution capabilities for Glencore’s expanded operations. The new protection and control schemes, along with upgraded power systems, increased operational reliability and efficiency of the power supply. The project addressed the immediate needs of production ramp-up and positioned the facility for future scalability.
