Surface Intake Fan Installation
2008
Mechanical

The Nickel Rim surface intake fans project involved installing two parallel fans with mine air gas heaters to enhance ventilation at the site.

BESTECH provided expert advice for electrical system design and led programming for the PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) and HMI (Human-Machine Interface).

SCOPE

The project included three 450 HP Howden Buffalo fans, each controlled by an Allen Bradley Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) to optimize airflow and energy consumption. Each fan had a gas-fired mine air heater delivering 37.0 MMBTHU to meet temperature and airflow needs. Three electrically operated isolation dampers allowed precise control over ventilation routes.

The system integrated three Allen Bradley Control Logix PLCs for operational control. HMI stations were set up using Rockwell RSView SE for real-time monitoring, enabling immediate adjustments and providing operational data to site managers and technicians.

OUTCOME

The project improved ventilation efficiency and safety standards. The advanced control system optimized airflow and temperature, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards. BESTECH developed a detailed “Operating, Maintenance and Surveillance Manual” to provide site personnel with essential guidelines for sustainable operation and maintenance of the system.
