KGHM

Substation Design & Installation
2016
Power Systems

BESTECH was engaged in a comprehensive multi-phase project for KGHM's Victoria Mine, a new underground operation.

The project encompassed extensive requirement planning for both the mine’s surface and underground components, including the engineering and design of a new substation and a site-wide distribution network.

SCOPE

The initial phase involved the engineering, design, and installation of the 230 kV substation, integrating extensive civil engineering, concrete foundations, steel structures, and power systems engineering. This phase included installing a 13.8 kV 3 MW generator for standby power. BESTECH’s responsibilities extended to securing funding through applications to Hydro One™ and IESO.

The design process covered everything from transmission lines to substations, including comprehensive system programming and grounding studies. The second phase focused on the 13.8 kV site distribution and networking, involving power and fibre distribution across the site, development of site standards for electrical equipment, and preliminary engineering for control rooms.

OUTCOME

The successful completion of both phases of the project provided KGHM’s Victoria Mine with a robust and reliable power infrastructure essential for its operations. Through strategic engineering and effective funding acquisition, BESTECH ensured that the mine’s power systems were not only optimally designed but also met all regulatory and operational standards for a safe and productive mining environment.
