Thickening Plant Programming & Commissioning
2020
Automation

Kirkland Lake Gold, through contractor Outotec, selected BESTECH as the control system integrator for the new thickening plant at the Macassa Mine.

The project required an efficient automation solution for consistent thickening processes, critical to the mine’s production and water management.

SCOPE

BESTECH designed, developed, and implemented the programmable logic controller (PLC) and human-machine interface (HMI) systems. The control platform used GE’s RX3i PLC technology and GE Proficy HMI/SCADA software for their robust performance and scalability.

The thickening plant included pumps, instrumentation, and a large thickener unit. BESTECH integrated all vendor equipment into a unified control architecture for centralized monitoring and control. This included PLC programming, custom HMI design, integration of remote I/O devices, network setup, pre-commissioning of instrumentation, field commissioning, and startup support.

OUTCOME

The thickening plant was successfully commissioned and is operating as expected. The automation system provides operators with a centralized interface for reliable, stable, and efficient operation. BESTECH’s integration of multiple systems contributed to a smooth commissioning process and a strong operational foundation for the facility, resulting in improved performance and enhanced operational visibility for the Macassa Mine team.
