Aging Circuit Replacement
2024
Power Systems

Vale identified a critical need to replace the aging #6 power circuit at Garson Mine due to significant wear and deterioration in the 5kV junction boxes.

A FEL-3 study determined the optimal routing for a new #6 circuit and recommended upgrading to a 500 MCM cable to enhance reliability and accommodate future demands.

SCOPE

The proposed solution involved redesigning and replacing the existing infrastructure. The project included abandoning the outdated 4/0 #6 power circuit cable in the power raise and installing a new 500 MCM power cable in the #5 compartment of the #2 shaft. This installation was planned from the new medium voltage junction box at 600L to various levels up to 3800L, specifically addressing critical sections requiring immediate attention. The new cable route included a borehole between 2400L and 3200L. At main junctions—1400L, 2400L, 3200L, and 3800L—the new 500 MCM cable was to be connected to new 600A load break switches, improving capacity and safety.

During the replacement, BESTECH verified incident energy levels at each S&C switch, ensuring coordination with the feeder breakers, which enhanced safety and operational reliability.

OUTCOME

This project allows Garson Mine to operate the Circuit #6 feeder reliably and safely, significantly increasing capacity to meet current mining requirements and future expansions, ensuring support for continued development and productivity without compromising safety.
