The collaboration covered all aspects of the mine’s closure, ensuring a comprehensive approach. This included two extensive site investigations led by BESTECH, with onsite interviews, detailed evidence collection of reclamation and decommissioning activities, and assessments of infrastructure and surroundings. This data collection was crucial for updating cost estimations and scheduling related to Vale’s closure obligations.

The 2023 update of the Vale Thompson Mine Closure Plan provided Vale with a practical roadmap for future closure activities, including cost and timing estimates. The plan adhered to the latest industry standards and incorporated significant updates to reclamation and decommissioning activities, reflecting evolving environmental and regulatory requirements. BESTECH also facilitated engagements between Vale and the Provincial government, ensuring the updated plan met corporate and regulatory expectations. This update equipped Vale to manage the mine’s closure effectively, optimizing environmental and financial outcomes while maintaining compliance and fostering community trust.
