Vale Canada Limited

Vale Canada Limited required a full replacement of the ventilation system at the Copper Cliff Nickel Refinery’s Granulation Cooling Tower to improve reliability and automation, particularly during seasonal transitions.
The outdated system lacked automation and required significant manual intervention, necessitating a modern solution.
SCOPE
BESTECH managed the programmable logic controller (PLC), distributed control system (DCS), and human-machine interface (HMI) programming and commissioning for the new ventilation system. The upgraded system includes two cooling cells with dual 40 hp fans and an automated shutoff valve. Designed for seasonal operation, it features DCS-integrated logic to bypass the cooling towers during winter.
BESTECH created functional specifications based on Vale’s control philosophy, programmed the PLCs and DCS for automation, and designed user-friendly HMI screens. Instrumentation was calibrated in the field, and the system underwent functional testing during commissioning. Startup support and operator training ensured a smooth transition to the new system.
OUTCOME
The new automated cooling tower system has improved CCNR’s operational flexibility and efficiency. With full seasonal automation and reduced manual intervention, it delivers consistent performance year-round. BESTECH’s collaboration with Vale’s teams ensured the solution met expectations and integrated into the refinery’s infrastructure. The successful commissioning of the new ventilation system has enhanced safety and reliability at the site.
