Your Role as Overhead Systems EIT (Engineer-In-Training)/Engineering Intern

Reporting to the Manager of Structural Engineering Services, as an Overhead Systems EIT/Engineering Intern, you will be responsible for designing and optimizing distribution and transmission lines, ensuring their efficient and safe functioning.  You will utilize your knowledge in engineering principles and computer-aided design (CAD) software to create detailed drawings, collaborate with our engineering team, and ensure compliance with safety and regulatory standards.

Your Key Accountabilities

  • Develop comprehensive designs for overhead utility installations, considering all applicable factors including power and structural load capacities, clearance requirements, grounding, environmental conditions, and equipment placement.
  • Utilize CAD software to create detailed drawings for overhead systems and associated infrastructure.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams, clients, and other stakeholders to incorporate design requirements and ensure seamless project execution.
  • Select appropriate materials for overhead systems, hardware, and accessories based on project requirements and site conditions.
  • Ensure compliance with utility, industry standards, regulations, and client standards to maintain the integrity and reliability of overhead infrastructure.
  • Assist in preparing cost estimates and schedules for overhead systems construction projects, considering material quantities, labour crews, and equipment required for project execution.
  • Liaise with government agencies, municipalities, and other regulatory bodies to obtain necessary permits and ensure compliance with local regulations.
  • Prepare reports and documentation required for approvals, permits, and project updates.
  • Prepare construction scopes and design basis for overhead systems projects.
  • Conduct field surveys to assess existing conditions and gather relevant data, including terrain, right-of-way, existing infrastructure, environmental constraints, and other relevant factors that may impact overhead systems design.
  • Prepare condition assessment reports.
  • Provide support during the construction phase of projects, responding to queries and clarifications from construction teams, and addressing design modifications and adjustments as needed.
  • Stay updated with industry trends, technologies, and best practices related to overhead systems design.
  • Seek opportunities to improve design efficiency and quality.
  • Foster a culture of safety, quality, and continuous improvement within the engineering team, promoting best practices and adherence to industry standards.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field is preferred.
  • Proficiency in CAD software for creating detailed structure layouts.
  • Knowledge of engineering principles, load calculations, and materials selection for overhead systems installations.
  • Familiarity with relevant safety standards, utility codes, and regulatory requirements is considered an asset.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to address design challenges and optimize utility networks.
  • Excellent communication skills to effectively collaborate with team members and stakeholders.
  • Ability to interact with clients and take detailed notes and meeting minutes.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Detail-oriented and able to maintain accurate documentation throughout the design process of projects.
  • Ability to work independently and prioritize tasks to meet project deadlines.
  • Experience in overhead systems design, utility infrastructure planning, or a related field is considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of PLS-CADD is considered an asset.
  • Familiarity with utility equipment and materials used in overhead systems construction is considered an asset.
  • Strong commitment to safety, quality, and sustainable design practices.
  • Willingness to travel as required and attend meetings and field visits to client sites.
  • Valid driver’s license with access to a personal vehicle.

Term: Full-Time, Permanent (40 hours/week)
